Calcitonin from salmon, 100 UI/ml
Calcitonin pharmy ii is a medicine in the form of an injectable solution based on salmon calcitonin (100 IU/1 mL).
Calcitonin is indicated in human medicine for:
- The prevention of acute bone loss associated with sudden immobilisation, particularly in patients with recent osteoporotic fractures.
- The treatment of Paget's disease, only in patients for whom alternative treatments have been ineffective or cannot be used, e.g. patients with severe renal insufficiency.
- Treatment of hypercalcaemia of malignant origin.
Calcitonin is a calciotropic hormone that inhibits bone resorption by acting directly on osteoclasts. By inhibiting osteoclast activity via its specific receptors, salmon calcitonin reduces bone resorption. In pharmacological studies, calcitonin has shown analgesic activity in animal models. Calcitonin significantly reduces bone turnover in situations characterised by an increased rate of bone resorption, such as Paget's disease and acute bone loss following sudden immobilisation.
The route of administration in humans is: subcutaneous, intramuscular or intravenous
