''What do you want to be when you grow up?'' Is the question it all starts with. A large portion of all equine veterinarians knew at a young age that they wanted to become an equine veterinarian. Because everyone wants to cure a sick animal and make the owner happy, right? The reality is somewhat different. Long days, short nights, a high workload, critical horse owners and a moderate income are some of the challenging aspects of this profession. Despite these challenges, it is still a wonderful profession. Grovet has developed #proudhorsevet stickers that are multi-purpose. To be used on social media, car, trailer, computer, notepad and mobile. Be proud, be a #proudhorsevet
In healthy horses, SAA is virtually undetectable, but in acute inflammation it increases within 6-12 hours and peaks at 1000-fold the baseline value. This is a faster and greater increase than, for example, fibrinogen.
As the inflammatory response subsides, it begins to decline within 12-24 hours. The dynamic nature of SAA makes it an ideal marker to evaluate disease severity and to monitor disease progression or improvement. SAA is well suited to evaluate response to treatment.
Since the 1st of September, Grovet has been the distributor of Horstem in the Netherlands, Germany and Poland. Horstem is the first registered veterinary medicine that consists of stem cells obtained from the umbilical cord of horses. These stem cells reduce lameness in horses with chronic inflammation of the joints (osteoarthritis). Horstem is ready-to-use, it can be injected directly into the affected joint.
In horses with osteoarthritis, Horstem inhibits the inflammatory response and the breakdown of cartilage. This reduces the horse's lameness and the clinical results last for more than a year.
Other advantages of stem cells obtained from the umbilical cord include:
· The cells are obtained non-invasively from birth tissue after birth.
Last Tuesday, Joop Loomans of the Equine High Performance Sports Group gave a presentation about new therapy possibilities in equine orthopaedics.
There is currently a lot of interest in the use of orthobiologics in veterinary medicine. These are cells or molecules taken from the horse's body or from other horses that can be used in the treatment of diseases that cause lameness.
Grovet has a selection of these types of treatment in its product range. By attending training courses, our employees are up to date with the latest information and can give good advice to veterinarians.
