This product is an active pharmaceutical ingredient and is intended for the treatment of ulcers in the duodenum and pars glandularis of the stomach.
Method of action
Sucralfate is a sucrose sulphate-aluminium complex with a triple mode of action:
- Directly inhibits the action of pepsin and bile
- Creates a protective barrier on the surface of the ulcer by binding with proteins exuded from the ulcer itself.
- Prevents pepsin, gastric acid and bile from diffusing across this barrier.
Combination with other medication
Sucralfate can be used in combination with antacids, H2 receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors. There is no interaction between these drugs and sucralfate. It is however advisable to wait a few hours between the administration of Sucralfate and other medication.
Sucralfate is largely unabsorbed and stays in the gastrointestinal tract. The few percent that are absorbed have a short half-life.
Sucralfate is permitted by the FEI.
