Aside from the lactating mare, the growing foal is the most demanding life stage in terms of nutrition. After foaling, the mare’s milk is perfect nutrition for the new foal that provides energy, protein and other essential nutrients to support healthy growth and development. After about two to three months, milk production begins to taper and additional nutrients will be needed by the foal to support his rapidly growing body. Young, growing horses seem to be able to adapt to a wide variety of nutritional management systems. The keys to any feeding program for developing horses is the same: to provide adequate, balanced nutrients and nurture a moderate, even rate of growth.
As is true for all mammals, the importance of the mother’s milk from birth through weaning is indisputable. While still nursing, a foal will relatively quickly take an interest in sampling forage. This early testing of forage will kick-start the development
At Grovet, we not only offer product leaflets, but also various end-user leaflets. Horse Vets work in all parts of the world, with all types of Equids: from million-dollar racehorses to the working donkeys and horses in Third World countries. The veterinary work focusing on working equines might not get a lot of coverage in magazines and journals, but that says nothing about the importance of the work.
Administering omeprazole granules can be challenging. The unique method of administration of Equizol, makes it an excellent addition to treatment options for gastric ulcers. Equizol is an omeprazole granulate that horse owners can easily administer themselves.
Stomach ulcers in sport horses
Grovet's Equizol is an omeprazole granulate for the treatment of gastric ulcers in horses. Stomach ulcers are very common in sport horses, with a prevalence of about 90% in both racehorses in training and high-level endurance horses. A lower (58%) prevalence of gastric ulcers has been reported in competition horses in other disciplines, and it is frequently found even in horses that are trained intensively (53%).
Inhibition of gastric acid production is considered the therapeutic basis of the treatment of gastric ulcers in horses. Omeprazole is the drug of choice for this purpose.
Our colleagues Michelle and Sylvia attended last month the 11th edition of EEHNC in Gent for the workshop "update on claims and legislation" for equine nutrition. It was a very useful workshop for our colleagues Michelle and Sylvia responsible for equine nutrition and claims at Grovet. The EEHNC is an international congress focused on equine health and nutrition. We look forward to next year's edition.
