About Horstem
Horstem is the first licensed veterinary medicine composed of equine mesenchymal umbilical cord stem cells. The stem cells are extracted from the umbilical cord of donor horses after the foal is born. It is a non-invasive and efficient extraction that results in a relatively high number of high-quality stem cells that are safe to use. A 1 ml vial of Horstem contains 15 million pluripotent mesenchymal stem cells.
Horstem is indicated to reduce lameness in horses with mild to moderate degenerative joint disease. The product is ready to use, it does not need to be defrosted by the veterinarian. Horstem can be stored in a regular refrigerator, no special ultra-low temperature equipment is needed for storage of the product.
How does Horstem work?
The mesenchymal stem cells in Horstem are activated after injection in the inflamed joint. After activation, anti-inflammatory cytokines are released into the tissue by the stem cells. Inhibiting inflammation reduces the symptoms of degenerative arthritis of the horse. The application of Horstem also inhibits cartilage breakdown and the progression of the disease.
The balance between degeneration and regeneration in the joint is restored.
What is the clinical efficacy of Horstem?
The safety and effectiveness of Horstem has been demonstrated by 7 clinical studies conducted by the product's developer, Equicord. These studies showed that in 72% of Horstem treated horses with mild to moderate degenerative joint disease, the lameness had been reduced to an unconsistent lameness or completely resolved. These results persist for a long time; after a period of 12 months after treatment, no relapse had been observed in 83% of horses.
