What is Bonpard Equimel?
Bonpard introduces a new product: Bonpard Equimel, a milk replacer for foals with a unique composition very similar to natural mare's milk. The milk replacer for foals is easy to prepare and has the same dry matter content as natural mare's milk when prepared according to instructions.
When can Bonpard Equimel be used?
Bonpard Equimel is an ideal product for situations where mare’s milk is not available, such as orphan foals or when the mare is suffering from mastitis. Other indications for Bonpard Equimel are cases where an insufficient quantity or quality of milk is available, for example twin foals or when the mare's milk production is insufficient. Foal milk replacer Bonpard Equimel can also be used when there is no or insufficient milk intake by the foal, for example due to illness or lameness of the foal.

Horse milk, compared to cowmilk, is richer in lactose and contains less protein and fat. In addition, the fatty acid composition of mare's milk is different, it contains more long fatty acid chains such as linoleic acid and linolenic acid (C18:2 and C18:3). These fatty acids have a positive effect on the immune system of both foals and adult horses. Also, the proportion of lactoferrin in mare's milk is higher than in cowmilk. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein with several functions in the body. Lactoferrin has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and potentially protects the foal from orally ingested pathogens.
The composition of Bonpard Equimel is tailored to these properties of mare's milk to provide optimal support for the foal. By using low-heated dairy products, protein denaturation is prevented and Bonpard Equimel is rich in bioactive substances. The fatty acid composition of the product has been optimized by the addition of vegetable fat sources, and lactoferrin is present in sufficient amounts in this product. Also, the ingredients in Bonpard Equimel are rich in Milk Fat Globular Membrane (MFGM), this has a positive effect on the digestibility and absorption of fat. MFGM has also shown positive effects on the immune system and development of young animals in several studies.
Bonpard Equimel, available through the veterinarian
Bonpard Equimel is available in a 10-kg bucket, enough for one to two weeks of complete nutrition for nursing foals. Bonpard foal milk, like the other Bonpard products, is only available via the veterinarian.
