Bonpard Muscle
Bonpard Muscle has been specially developed for horses recovering from equine exertional rhabdomyolysis and horses that are underweight. Equine exertional rhabdomyolysis can be caused by excessive training, nutritional deficiencies, continuous muscle strain or metabolic imbalances. Adjusting the feed to a high fat, high fibre, low starch and low sugar diet, combined with proper training usually leads to a significant improvement. For horses that are underweight a high fat, low starch and low sugar diet is also preferable over a diet high in starch and sugar. Horses have a limited ability to digest starches, with a high-starch diet often leading to colic, laminitis or diarrhoea. On the other hand horses are exceptionally good at digesting fats, which provide horses with two to three times more energy than carbohydrates.
Horses with recurrent equine exertional rhabdomyolysis need a diet in which fats provide 15-20% of the energy. In the average equine diet this percentage is closer to 10%. The transition to a high fat diet should be made gradually as the horse’s metabolism needs time to adapt.
Characteristics
- Very low sugar and starch content
- Contains omega-3 and 6 fatty acids
- High vitamin E and selenium content
- Limited amount of high quality protein
Ingredients
Due to the relatively high fat, low starch and low sugar content of Bonpard Muscle, myocytes are provided with enough fatty acids to use as their energy source, meaning they need less glucose and glycogen. This means less glycogen needs to be stored in the myocyte, helping to prevent symptoms seen in certain types of rhabdomyolysis. A lower starch and sugar content in feed has the added benefit of making horses less “hot-blooded”. Being too temperamental and stressed can also contribute to the development of equine exertional rhabdomyolysis.
Bonpard Muscle has been carefully put together and contains poly-unsaturated fats which support the immune system (including omega-3 and -6 fatty acids) and help maintain a shiny, healthy coat. Bonpard Muscle contains carefully selected fibres which support healthy hindgut fermentation. It contains high quality protein with a good amino acid make-up.
The addition of vitamins, minerals and trace elements has been adjusted to complement the composition of the supplement, ensuring it contains the best combination of nutrients. For example, there is a high percentage of vitamin E and selenium, which is necessary because horses being fed a high quantity of unsaturated fatty acids are in need of extra antioxidants. This addition means extra supplementation is unnecessary!
